Thyroid Ultrasound can detect nodules and differentiate between solid and cystic nodules, detect (macro-)calcification and assess certain features.
It can also detect goitre, forms of thyroiditis- Hashimoto’s disease , and other pathology.
Your doctor may refer you also on a background family history of thyroid disease, or as a follow up/ progress scan.
A lazy thyroid (hypothyroidism) may also atrophy (shrink).
Parathyroid lesions are detected about the same region.
There is no preparation required before your Thyroid ultrasound.
