RENAL TRACT ULTRASOUND- also called KUB = KIDNEYS, URETERS and BLADDER.
This test assesses the kidneys, ureters (the tubes draining the urine from the kidneys) and the bladder. Calculi, cysts, obstruction and many other pathologies are amenable to ultrasound. Cortical thickness, fibrosis and atrophy can affect renal function. Prostate size is also assessed. Post-micturition residual volume (after voiding) may increase the risk of further infection/ dysfunction.
Blood pressure may be affected by renal disease. In particular, your doctor may also request RENAL ARTERY DOPPLER in the case of high blood pressure, which may be directly a result of renal artery stenosis (narrowing).
PREP.1: FULL BLADDER:
For this test, you need to have a full bladder. Empty your bladder only once 2 hours before the test (this is so that you do not have an uncomfortably overfull bladder at appointment time). Do not empty the bladder again. Then drink 1 litre of water (5 average cups) and finish it 1 hour before the test. Also drink another half litre (2 cups) half an hour before the test if you can. Do not empty your bladder until you are asked- for the post-voiding volume measurement.
