POPLITEAL FOSSA is an ultrasound examination of the back of the knee. It can assess for Baker’s cyst, popliteal artery aneurysm, posterior meniscal cysts, muscle tears, haematoma/ blood collections, and other abnormalities.
Joint effusions can also present in the posterior aspect of the knee.
Be aware also, that not so infrequently, we find the cause of pain to be a thrombus of the short saphenous vein, in which a venous doppler is further required. Pre-dispositions to thrombocytosis, trauma, inflammation and other venous clotting factors should be clinically considered.
No preparation is required for this examination.
